10 Tips for Protecting Your Emotional State and Mental Health During the War
How to protect your emotional state and mental health during the war – we share advice from psychologists. The main rules include 5 components: healthy sleep, balanced nutrition, daily physical activity, communication and positive emotions.
- Read the news no more than once an hour
Do not sit on your phone all the time. Read the news no more than once an hour, because the situation will not change dramatically in that time, and you will be able to stay calm.
- Information hygiene: trust official sources
You can monitor the situation through the main official channels of communication. It is best to do this on Telegram: subscribe to the President’s Telegram channel, Suspilne News, UNIAN, Ukrinform, the State Service of Special Communications, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and other Ukrainian media in the search.
- Support the Armed Forces of Ukraine
If you cannot join the Armed Forces to defend the state or join the territorial defence, you can send financial support to our defenders.
- Stay calm
We understand that staying calm in wartime is very hard, but be sure to do something. Remember the words of the famous psychologist Carnegie: Keep busy! It is the cheapest medicine on earth — and one of the most effective!
- Care about someone
Today in Ukraine almost everyone has become a volunteer: restaurants prepare lunches for the territorial defence, women and young people weave camouflage nets, collect food, medicines and necessities. Join the volunteer effort: weave camouflage nets, share non-perishable food, bring from home things that may be needed by people who have been evacuated and are staying in our city. Share food with lonely people who live near you.
- Stay physically active
Do your usual chores: cook, clean the house, tidy things in the wardrobe, wash the dishes, tidy up the garden or the plot of land around your house. Physical activity should be daily; it distracts from negative thoughts.
- Read fairy tales to children
A fairy tale is the best therapy and sedative for a child. Read books, discuss the plots, analyse instructive parables. If you do not have the strength to read, listen to audio fairy tales on Telegram. Ukrainian fairy tales AUDIO: Yava and Pavlusha
- Hug your family and friends
Remember that the best things cannot be bought with money. Among them are hugs, smiles, support, warm calls asking “How are you?”, and moral support.
- Solve problems as they arise
Deal with troubles only as they arise. There is no need to overthink, to fantasise, or to run through different scenarios of how events might develop in your head. Such thoughts will certainly not serve your emotional stability. If you have decided not to evacuate, take care of your family’s safety during an “Air Raid Alert”.
- Pray for our defenders
For all Ukrainians, time has stopped. We do not know what day of the week it is, but we know that today is Russia’s War Against Ukraine Day. We go to bed at night with a single dream – to wake up alive in the morning! Pray for our defenders and the Armed Forces of Ukraine!
