Ecology and the Present Day

On 8 October, students of group 1RP-11 of the Separate Structural Subdivision “Odesa Technical Professional College of ONTU”, together with group tutor M. M. Burundukova, visited the company “Ukrekoprom”, which deals with the disposal and destruction of hazardous waste. The aim of the excursion: to draw young people’s attention to a pressing environmental problem of our time – littering, its impact on the environment and on the quality of our lives – and to show what ways there are of solving this problem.

Vitalii Ivanovych Dankevych, the company’s director, introduced the history of its creation and its goals, spoke about the specifics of the enterprise’s work, and answered students’ questions about the organisation of waste transportation. The excursion participants had the opportunity to see the whole working process of a modern production complex for destroying waste by the thermal method, without creating a threat to the environment. Waste is destroyed by high-temperature incineration in a special furnace in compliance with sanitary standards, improving society’s quality of life and contributing to a better environment.

Every year the number of landfills grows, with more and more plastic and polyethylene waste. The war in Ukraine adds a great deal of waste that enters the atmosphere: fine dust, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, aldehydes, and so on.

On 9 October, Burundukova additionally held an educational hour, “Ecology and the Present Day”, during which students shared their impressions of the excursion and expressed their own opinions on measures for preserving the environment. Such meetings contribute to a better understanding of environmental issues, the solution of which is the guarantee of our healthy future.
