Educational event on the topic of Academic Integrity

On 06 November 2024, Viktor Myroshnychenko, a lecturer of the Subject Committee for Social Sciences and Humanities, held an educational event for students on the topic “Academic Integrity: Challenges, Problems and Prospects”. Great assistance in organising and holding the conference was provided by the Computer Systems Division (Skorniakova O.V.), the Refrigeration Division (Bryhadyr L.H.) and the Deputy Director of the SSD “OTPC ONTU”, lecturer of the Refrigeration Subject Committee Ihor Berkan

Students of years 3-4 of the SSD OTPC ONTU in the specialties of the refrigeration and computer divisions took part in the conference.

The participants of the event were addressed with welcoming remarks by the Deputy Director of the SSD “OTPC ONTU”, lecturer of the Refrigeration Subject Committee Ihor Berkan, who stressed that academic integrity is a set of ethical principles and rules defined by law by which participants in the educational process must be guided in learning, teaching and conducting scientific activity, in order to ensure trust in learning outcomes and creative achievements. Ihor Berkan pointed out that by academic integrity we mean the rules that a person must observe when creating their own ideas if they use supporting information. In most cases this concerns students, because in years 1 and 2 they prepare written assignments on various topics in various subjects, and in years 3-4 – reports, course papers and graduation theses.

The moderator of the conference, lecturer of social sciences and humanities Viktor Myroshnychenko, stressed that since the entry into force of the Law of Ukraine “On Education”, academic integrity has become an inseparable part of the educational process, and failure to observe it is a threat to every student. For failure to observe the principles of integrity in their studies, students may be required to retake any course, and may even be expelled.

At the end of the conference, the participants drew the conclusion that preventing corruption, raising awareness of corruption and building a general culture of integrity are the main tasks for all participants in the modern educational process in Ukraine. Therefore, developing educational documents on combating corruption and on integrity, supporting the exchange of knowledge, and building partnerships between higher education and professional pre-higher education institutions are important areas that we must develop through joint efforts today.
