The training of specialists in the specialty “Installation and Maintenance of Refrigeration and Compressor Machines and Units” began in 1964 at the Odesa Food Industry Technical School, later the Odesa Technical Professional College. In 2014 the specialisation “Installation and Maintenance of Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems” was introduced. Lecturers of the subject committee Iryna Berkan and Liudmyla Bryhadyr worked as part of the working group that developed the sectoral standard of higher education of Ukraine (SSHE) in the specialty “Installation and Maintenance of Refrigeration and Compressor Machines and Units” for the educational and qualification level of “junior specialist”. The SSHE was approved by Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 557 of 07.05.2014, but it ceased to be valid in 2015, so the educational and professional programmes were drawn up in accordance with the standard of higher education of Ukraine for the first (bachelor’s) level, specialty 142 “Energy Engineering”, approved by Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 1136 of 19.10.2018.
The prerequisites for licensing the educational programmes “Installation and Maintenance of Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems” and “Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems” were the results of labour market analysis, employers’ requests, and the aim of ensuring continuity of the educational process in the specialty “Energy Engineering”. The first intake of full-time students on the EPP “Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems” took place in 2018, and in 2021 this EPP was accredited at the higher education level of “bachelor”. This opened up the possibility of making effective use of the work of the Subject Committee for Specialised Refrigeration Courses and of the Department of Energy Engineering of Odesa Technical Professional College.
Over 60 years of work, the College’s teaching staff has accumulated considerable experience in training competitive specialists in the field of knowledge in specialty 142 “Energy Engineering”. Training under the EPPs “Installation and Maintenance of Refrigeration and Compressor Machines and Units” and “Installation and Maintenance of Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems” at the level of Professional Junior Bachelor has been carried out since 2020, and the first graduation took place in 2024. The standard of professional pre-higher education in specialty 142 “Energy Engineering” for the educational and professional degree of “Professional Junior Bachelor” was approved by Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 1070 of 22.11.2022. The standard of professional pre-higher education was developed with the participation of the Head of the subject committee, Iryna Berkan, who chaired the subcommittee for specialty 142 Energy Engineering of Scientific and Methodological Committee No. 5 for Chemistry and Engineering of the Professional Pre-Higher Education Sector of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Science.
To improve and update the EPPs “Installation and Maintenance of Refrigeration and Compressor Machines and Units” and “Installation and Maintenance of Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems”, in 2023 the proposals of students, employers and other stakeholders were taken into account by processing the results of surveys and through participation in discussing changes at meetings of the subject committee, the Student Council of the Energy Systems Division and the Council of Employers of specialty 142 “Energy Engineering”.

Practical training
Practical training of students under the EPPs “Installation and Maintenance of Refrigeration and Compressor Machines and Units” and “Installation and Maintenance of Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems” is carried out through training placements in the College’s production workshops and specialised laboratories and work placements at leading enterprises of the sector. It enables students of professional pre-higher education to achieve the integral and specialised competencies needed for further professional activity, as evidenced by the matrices of correspondence between the graduate’s competencies and the components of the educational and professional programme.
The work placements provided for by the EPPs take place at enterprises in Odesa and in the Odesa, Vinnytsia and Cherkasy regions, in accordance with agreements concluded with the College.
The purpose of the training metalworking and mechanical placement is to familiarise students with safety rules and the safe operation of equipment and with workplace organisation; to develop students’ skills in working with hand and power tools; to use machine tools (lathe, drilling and milling machines) to perform practical tasks; to study the properties of basic and auxiliary materials and their rational use; and to learn to work in a team.
The purpose of the electrical installation placement is to familiarise students with the main safety and fire safety rules when carrying out electrical installation work; to develop students’ skills in assembling an electric circuit from separate elements; connecting electrical equipment; participating in installation work, including earthing networks; preventive and routine repair of electrical equipment; laying cables and wires in ducts, boxes and trays; installing insulators; and marking out installation locations and installing protection and control devices.

The purpose of the measurement and design placement is to consolidate in practice the knowledge that students gained while studying general technical courses: Engineering and Computer Graphics, Theoretical Mechanics, Materials Science, Technology of Structural Materials, Fundamentals of Metrology and Standardisation, Strength of Materials, and Fundamentals of Design. It develops students’ skills and abilities in using specialised measuring instruments; making sketches of parts of mechanisms whose working surface may wear during operation; and identifying material properties using specialised equipment.
The purpose of the training placement for acquiring skills and abilities in a skilled trade is to develop in students the specialised competencies related to the operation and repair of refrigeration and compressor machines and units and to occupational safety rules while performing them; and the ability to solve typical technical and technological tasks related to technological processes and the functioning of refrigeration and compressor machines and refrigeration equipment in a workshop or laboratory setting.
The purpose of the technological work placement is to gain experience in installing, adjusting, testing and commissioning refrigeration and compressor machines and units in a production environment; the ability to observe the prescribed operating modes of refrigeration and process equipment; to identify and use the necessary equipment, materials, tools and working substances; and to apply occupational safety and fire safety rules in solving professional tasks.
The purpose of the pre-graduation placement is to give the student the opportunity to develop the concept of a qualification project for designing individual elements and components of refrigeration and compressor machines and units, or of heat and power systems as a whole; to analyse the possibility of applying the technical solutions studied during the pre-graduation placement in their own graduation project; to study how the occupational safety system is organised in the given unit; to become familiar with methods of accounting for energy resource and material costs in order to calculate the unit cost of cooling; and to forecast the consequences of production activity for human safety and the environment.
On the basis of the College’s workshops and laboratories, professional competitions are held among the division’s students after each type of placement: “Best Locksmith”, “Best Electrical Installer”, “Best Refrigeration Technician” and “Best Air Conditioning Technician”; the committee’s students also take part in regional and all-Ukrainian olympiads and all-Ukrainian professional skills competitions, including the ChillTech Students Awards.
