8 September – International Literacy Day

Today, 8 September, we mark International Literacy Day – a day that reminds us that language shapes not only thoughts but also our identity, dignity and strength. This is not just a date – it is a call to speak consciously, beautifully, in Ukrainian.

On the eve of this day, groups 2RP-11 and 2KS-61 held a joint educational hour, “Speak Beautifully”, led by their group tutors Burundukova M. M. and Kryvchenko A. A.

The focus was on 50 slang words that students use every day in conversation. They were compared with literary, emotionally precise Ukrainian equivalents.

It was not just a language analysis – it was a conversation about ourselves, about how we are perceived when we speak Ukrainian consciously, expressively and with love.

- “cringe” → “awkward” / “shameful”

- “it hit” → “liked it” / “touched the heart”

- “vibey” → “atmospheric” / “emotional”

-“sigma” → “confident” / “self-sufficient”

-“skuf” → “loser” / “passive”

The students did not just listen – they discussed, laughed and recalled their own examples. And most importantly, they felt that the Ukrainian language can be modern, dynamic and alive, yet at the same time profound, respectful and native.

This hour became not only an educational event but also an act of linguistic patriotism. Because when we choose the Ukrainian word, we choose ourselves.
