The lecturers of the committee develop new curricula and every year produce manuals and methodological materials for the relevant courses.

In order to popularise the creative heritage of Ukrainian and foreign writers, spread the national and patriotic traditions of the Ukrainian people, raise the level of literacy and form a well-rounded and nationally conscious personality with deep spiritual and patriotic feelings, the committee actively and systematically carries out educational and extracurricular work:

  • festive assemblies on 1 September dedicated to the Day of Knowledge and Independence Day of Ukraine,
  • the linguistic competition “Dyvoslovo” (“Wonderful Word”),
  • literary and musical celebrations (“With Love and Respect for the Kobzar” (for the 205th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko), “The Righteous Soul of the Kobzar Blazes Like a Candle”, “Along the Paths of a Great Destiny”, “Shevchenko’s Glory Is the Glory of Ukraine”, “My Izmarahd” (for the anniversary of I. Ya. Franko),
  • student scientific and practical conferences (“Profession: Vectors of Development”, “Through Love to Immortality” (for the 145th anniversary of the birth of Lesia Ukrainka), Skovoroda Readings “Know the Human Being in Yourself”, “The Legacy of Ivan Franko in the Light of Today” (for the 160th anniversary of the birth of I.Ya. Franko), as well as a conference for the 250th anniversary of the birth of I.P. Kotliarevskyi),
  • educational sessions (“The Theme of Love in the Works of Ivan Franko”, “In the World of the Japanese Fairy Tale”, “165 Years Since the Birth of O. Wilde, Poet, Playwright, Prose Writer and Essayist”, “A. Kuzmenko – a True Son and Patriot of Ukraine”, “456 Years Since the Birth of W. • student wall newspaper competitions,
  • excursions to Odesa libraries, museums, theatres, etc.

Every year, for the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, the linguistic educational and entertainment competition “Dyvoslovo” is held in the College assembly hall, organised by the Subject Committee for Philological Disciplines. The participants are students of our College as well as students of other institutions, in particular the Separate Structural Subdivision “Professional College of Maritime Transport of the National University “Odesa Maritime Academy””. Every year guests are invited to the celebration; among them have been Ukrainian writers of the Odesa region:

  • Oleksa Serhiiovych Riznychenko,
  • Dmytro Romanovych Shupta,
  • Serhii Viktorovych Dmytriiev (Associate Professor of the Department of General and Slavic Linguistics of Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University; head of the Odesa regional organisation of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine),
  • Hanna Ivanivna Vyvat (Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Language Didactics of ONAFT),
  • Halyna Yosypivna Bevz (Head of the Subject Committee for Ukrainian Language and Literature of the O. Solianyk Odesa Professional Nautical College of the Merchant and Fishing Fleet),
  • Oleh Semenovych Oliinykiv (taught at OTC for 27 years, passed away in 2018).

Each time the winning teams receive books by the writers with personal autographs as gifts.

Every spring, at the beginning of March, the lecturers of Ukrainian language and literature and the group tutors of our College organise and hold events dedicated to the Shevchenko Days: literary and musical celebrations, compositions, themed talks, educational sessions, quizzes and moments of poetry. The aim of these events is to honour the work of the Kobzar, to study and appreciate the past of our state, and to instil love and respect for Mother Ukraine.

Every year, turning the pages of the life and work of T. H. Shevchenko, the students of our College discover new horizons of the heritage of the Great Kobzar and become convinced of the seething energy and power of the Kobzar’s word, and of the greatness and indomitable spirit of the great son of Ukraine, a Prometheus, an Apostle.

The achievements of the Subject Committee for Philological Disciplines include the preparation, participation and victories of our College’s students in language and literature competitions and olympiads.
